It's spring, what does this mean for your sugarcane?

We’ve just come out of the chillier winter season that might have limited your production levels or it means you’re ready to start a new. Spring is upon us and your planting time has sprung. Sugarcane is indigenous to the subtropical and tropical countries of Asia which, as you know, means that if your soil and climate reflects these conditions, you’re good to grow.

Temperature

Expect temperatures to range between 15 and 35 degrees this month and rainfall to increase from last’s. With 69,9mm to keep your crops a little more saturated and longer hours of daylight on the way, irrigation expenses (should you have been using an additional system) might stand to decrease if predicted rainfall measurements don’t spontaneously drop. This is not to say that your setbacks from the drought will be completely eradicated, just that things are looking better and wetter. It is possible that the rainfall will be patchy. The lower climate thermal readings might not help with radical plant growth but the warmer conditions to follow in the summer will kick start germination after your crops respond to this months extended hours of sunlight.

The right time to plant

Now is the time to start planting due to the heightened rain levels of the season which soak the soil, making it more fertile for the sugarcane to grow in. Keep an eye on your soil’s drainage though, sugarcane is pretty sensitive to salt levels which increase in the soil if it becomes waterlogged. You don’t want the plants to wilt or have their growth stunted from excess saline. With summer coming up next, temperatures will start rising making climate conditions ideal for germination.
